Small businesses in Wales usually get SEO help from one of four places: a local agency, a freelancer, a national agency or someone in-house. The right choice depends less on size and more on who understands your customers and will show you what they are doing.
Your main options
A local agency suits businesses that want one team for their website, SEO and Google Business Profile. Ask who will do the work and how often you will speak to them. A freelancer works well for a focused job, such as local SEO or a technical audit. Check that they have time for your project and that work won't stop if they are away. A national agency makes sense for a larger or e-commerce business. For a small local firm, check that you'll still get enough attention. Doing it yourself is realistic for the basics. Keeping your Google Business Profile accurate, asking for reviews and publishing useful service pages all make a difference. Questions to ask before you sign:
- What exactly will you do in the first three months?
- Which keywords will you target, and why?
- How will you report enquiries, not just rankings?
- Who owns the website, content and accounts?
- Can you show a relevant example from a similar business?
Be wary of guaranteed rankings or vague monthly reports. Nobody controls Google, and SEO work should be clear enough for you to understand.
