A decent web designer does more than make things look pretty. They should help you get more people picking up the phone or sending a message. Before you decide, check who actually owns the site, what happens once it goes live and how people are meant to find you.
Start with what the website must do
Jot down what you really want the website to do. Is it to get more calls, booking requests or online orders? If you're clear about this from the start, it's much easier to see which designer is actually offering what you need.
Check their recent work
Have a look at their recent sites on your phone. Can you spot what they're selling, see what to do next and ring them without faffing about? If it's a pain to use, it doesn't matter how fancy it looks.
Ask about the full cost
- Is hosting included, and what does it cost each year?
- Who writes the page content?
- How many rounds of changes are included?
- What does support cost after launch?
- Do you own the domain, website and accounts?
Make sure SEO is part of the build
Ask how they'll set up the pages, how it'll work on a mobile and how your Google Business Profile links in. If you're swapping an old site for a new one, check what happens to your old pages so you don't lose people along the way.
