Does Your Welsh Business Need a Bilingual Website?

Most small businesses won't need a full bilingual website straight away. If some of your customers speak Welsh, it's worth picking out the pages they use most and making sure those are available in Welsh and easy to use.

When it makes sense

Some businesses have more reason than others. Maybe you trade in a strongly Welsh-speaking area, sell to public-sector clients or want Welsh to be a visible part of your brand. If so, start with the pages people actually use, like your homepage, services or contact details.

Start with a manageable first step

A good first step is to get your contact page, main services and opening hours sorted in Welsh. Helo Blod will translate up to 500 words a month for free, which is handy if you're just getting started.

Set it up properly

  • Give Welsh pages their own web addresses
  • Make it easy to switch between English and Welsh on each page
  • Write proper Welsh titles and descriptions for each page
  • Ask a Welsh speaker to check your wording before it goes live

Try not to leave any Welsh pages half-finished. It's better to have a few pages that are kept up to date than lots that end up out of date.
